Ms. Heleno has written an important document for anyone who works with young children. She has focused on the teaching of colors to a very young child. However, in so doing she has described in detail a process that has much broader application. The changes in our society over the last half century have, in my opinion, robbed several generations of our youth of much of their potential. Television and computers dominate our perceptions of our world and supplant much of our imagination with the perceptions of others. Ms. Heleno has given us a way to take back what has been lost by delineating a process we can use, if we are willing to rise to the challenge, that will optimize the potential of each child. She makes a persuasive argument based on well-affirmed learning theories and current scientific investigations of the physiology of the human mind.

"I think Nancy Heleno's research and text contain incredibly valuable information and are presented in a practical, useful and up-to-date form. I've read the book and attended the United Way's Love to Learn conference. Already I have used the information in my own work, and shared it with educators in our early childhood program to support and enhance activities currently being used."
